To round out his look at the strengths of the DualShock 3 and the 360 Wireless, Fuchal offers his reasons behind the WiiMote officially 'rocking'.
1. Motion Sensing
This is a pretty obvious one, as the Wiimote’s selling point has been its motion sensing abilities since we first heard about the Wii consol itself. But the ways in which game control can be so varied and fun, depending on the WiiMote movement required, is still rather amazing after 18 months on the market.
Although a number of developers have taken a lazy approach, others have shown how versatile the WiiMote can be. Fishing in Zelda: Twilight Princess demonstrated just how precise one had to be with flick casting. Whilst the dancing stages of WarioWare Smooth Moves turned rhythmic air punching into a whole new adventure. First person shooters and adventures like EA’s Medal of Honour: Vangaurd and Metroid Prime 3 have also confirmed the WiiMote’s ability to be fantastic for replicating an aiming weapon with your display unit. And with the soon to be released Star Wars title, Force Unleashed, many gamers may finally have their life long dreams fulfilled: being able to wield a lightsabre controller!
2. Mii Storage and transportation
One of the great strengths of the Wii is its party play appeal. And to facilitate this better, those ingenious guys and gals and Nintendo have came up with internal memory for the WiiMote.
The result being that when you get a call from friends to pop around to their place for some Wii action, you can store your Mii and save data to your WiiMote, head on over, and jump into the action. And if you find yourself in a coherent state at the end of the night – or the next morning – you can save any progress you’ve made back to your WiiMote and take it home with you. Marvellous!
3. Registration Racing
OK, so this one will require a bit of explaining first. One of the consequences of the WiiMote’s storage and transportation function is the need to sync your WiiMote with your friends’ Wii consoles. Sure you can do a permanent sync at the start of the session, but if you leave it as a temporary sycn then you unlock Nintendo’s Easter egg game: registration racing. During big party play sessions, friends can bet drinks and/or money on whose WiiMote will get pole registration. An alternative way to play is to make it so whomever’s remote registers last has to do the next drinks run. Or you can be really cruel and make a drinking game out of it: if you register first, you have to down your drink!
