If you are like most gamers, Infinity Ward’s masterpiece Call of Duty 4 has forever changed your expectations and perspective of online multiplayer gaming to the point where titles like Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Metal Gear Solid 4 seemed a little disappointing. Both these games early last year would have been ground breaking and undoubtedly swamped with online gamers enjoying their multiplayer action. However, due to Call of Duty 4’s ground breaking and addictive online game play, most gamers found themselves back on the COD4 servers within a week, completely forgetting all about the aforementioned titles.

That being said, there was one aspect of Call of Duty 4 that Infinity Ward grossly over looked and which left gamers around the world scratching their heads: online co-op. Ever since the innovative online co-op of Crackdown, console gamers expect to play through a games campaign mode with their friends. There is nothing more satisfying than working as a team to finish a game. Bungie got this right with Halo 3’s online co-op campaign mode making it one of the highlights of gaming in the last decade, whether you were a serious gamer or not.

So when Activision announced yesterday that there would be online co-op for Call of Duty World at War with up to four players online as well as two player split screen, there was a sudden shift in the anticipation for the game. Gaming forums have been abuzz with Activision’s press release also detailing the unlocking of perks and the ability to rank up in co-op campaign mode, which again will be a first for the COD franchise, and again is causing a shift in opinions.
The general mood of gamers (including myself) is that they feel the WWII genre has been done to death (pardon the pun), but with the fact that players will now be able to complete all the campaign missions with their buddies over Live or PSN is just what we have all been waiting for. There is no doubt that Call of Duty World at War will be eaten up by gamers, but thanks to this announcement I believe that Treyarch has taken the franchise in a new direction that has been sorely needed since Call of Duty 2. I for one will have no problems spending my gaming dollar on a title that will allow me to participate in a new and unique gaming experience. And I’m now more than willing to eat my words, as I await this release.
