Don't be offended, Sphynx. Although they call themselves a 'Baptist' Church - they are not recognised by the denomination. They are as Baptist as you or I just starting a church and calling ourselves that. Besides hating on Jews, gays, soldiers and the Catholic Church, this group also denounces the following forms of Protestantism - Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Episcopalians and Baptists. That's right, Baptists!

So there you have it.

This group IS NOT Christian. Westboro 'Baptist' Church is a cult. They don't worship Jesus, they worship the pastor Fred Phelps.

On the WACO scale, 1 being heaven's Gate, 5 being Waco and 10 being Jonestown - I give them a 7. It really is only a matter of time before they all drink their Kool aid.

Aside from the shitty singing and colourful placards, I'm not sure why Westborough get singled out for taking a literal interpretation of the bible? Most Baptist churches share the same sentiments.
The Southern Baptist Convention is one of the largest Baptist movements and the largest Protestant group in the US and they've made their thoughts on the matter clear:

"We affirm God's plan for marriage and sexual intimacy – one man, and one woman, for life. Homosexuality is not a "valid alternative lifestyle." The Bible condemns it as sin. It is not, however, unforgivable sin. The same redemption available to all sinners is available to homosexuals. They, too, may become new creations in Christ."

My question to people pointing out how crazy the Westborough Church is (and don't get me wrong, I think they're batshit insane): Why are these guys ostracized when, from where I'm sitting, they share most of the same beliefs as other christian/baptist denominations?

I think the reason they get singled out is because even though they may share the same sentiments as most Christians, they forget two very important teachings of Jesus.

1: Only God has the right to judge man based on his sins

2: Forgiveness is the key to salvation - God cannot forgive our sins if we do not forgive the trespasses of others unto ourselves.

Forgiveness is borne out of unconditional love. You cannot love someone and hate them at the same time, just as you cannot walk forwards and backwards at the same time. As for this song, "God hates the world"? How can He hate the world if He sent Jesus to die for our sins because He loved it so much? look up John 3:16 - it's says it right there in black and white.

It's people like this that make Christians in general get viewed in a negative light. However, I forgive them their ignorance and bigotry because I know the power of God can overcome this cult chicanery.

Yeah I'm familiar with these guys... who is that British guy that's always annoying celebrities with his hammy documentaries? (Just googled it, Louis Theroux). I watched his take on Westborough on the plane back from Germany, they're an interesting family.
