Meier goes next-gen
Sid Meier's long-running PC strategy-simulation series Civilization will be heading to consoles for the first time thanks to Civilization Revolution, just announced by 2K Games. The title will be Meier's first foray onto next-gen consoles, and a spring 2008 release is mooted for both consoles and handhelds.
The new title is built from scratch for consoles, and we're promised the same epic empire-building as past Civilization games, wrapped-up in an all new accessible, visually immersive, and action-packed world for consoles and handhelds. A full single-player campaign featuring "vast re-playability and unmatched addictive gameplay as well as revolutionary features like real-time interaction with leaders and advisors" is promised, not to mention extensive multiplayer modes and integrated video and voice chat.
Famous historical leaders will feature, with 16 civilizations available to control, and the game has been streamlined somewhat with quicker gameplay, more action and 'intense combat' promised. Online, team-play, head-to-head and epic free-for-all matches are planned. As well as the video and voice chat we hear mention of downloadable content, leaderboards, ranked games, matching and more besides.
“Civilization Revolution is the game I’ve always wanted to make!” beamed Sid Meier, Director of Creative Development at Firaxis Games. “We are excited to take advantage of the power of next generation consoles and the ingenuity of handhelds, to create a great and unique strategy game for newcomers to the series, as well as the millions of fans around the world who enjoy Civilization on the PC.”
No specific platforms have been confirmed yet, but Xbox 360, PS3, PSP and DS seems likely. Possibly Wii, too? More as we get it.
