NextGEN Gamers preview of John Woo's Stranglehold

John Woo's Stranglehold

John Woo is renowned for his action movies and in particular their acrobatic sequences with stand-offs and slow motion. Gamers will be pleased to hear that he will be bringing all his trademarks into his newest game “Stranglehold”. There are flocks of doves, heroes wielding duel pistols and no shortage of slow-motion gunplay. Recently released to the Xbox live market, the demo is a 1.3gb download, and promises to bring all the shoot-em-up you would expect from John Woo.

The demo contains the first level of the game and is extremely fun. You play as Inspector Tequila (Chow Yun Fat) entering the Hong Kong marketplace in search of the kidnappers of a fellow officer. It introduces you to the controls which are relatively easy to pick up. Before you know it, you will be sliding down rails shooting thugs as you pass them, then landing on a cart and crashing into some stalls and shooting more thugs. Did I mention you will be shooting thugs? There are plenty of Asian gangsters to test your "Tequila" skills. Also coming with the demo is standoff mode. Standoff mode is similar to the matrix dodge, everything is put into a semi freeze frame. You have to dodge bullets with the left stick while shooting with your right trigger. Another mode is true shot which acts like a sniping mode. The great thing about this is seeing the different reactions you can get from shooting enemies in different areas. Shoot them in the groin and see what happens!

A great fusion of John Woo direction and Chow Yun Fat antics. Stranglehold is turning out to be a great shooting game. Coming to a store near you in a matter of weeks.
